We ended up on a small, narrow two-lane road that wound through hilly, wooded terrain. The trailer’s wheels slipped off the no-should road, causing the trailer to bounce and flip onto its side, destroying it and ending our trip. It was near midnight, I think, when we needed to find a place to stay for the night. Someone in the emergency crew clearing our trailer from the roadway pointed us toward toward the Relax Inn, and I’m so thankful we ended up there. This roadside motel was super clean, with updated decor and really comfortable beds. The rooms are spacious for a roadside motel, and come with a fridge and microwave. (Nice sized TV’s too, but we didn’t use those at all.) It was Thursday night, and they offered us two rooms next door to each other for my family of five (and three dogs). Being pet-friendly was a huge deal in our emergency situation. The next morning, we had to deal with all the ramifications of the wreck; getting to the tow yard where the camper was taken to empty it, finding a U-Haul to put everything in so we could get it all home, and, of course, ensuring the kids could still do their remote learning. The hotel had free WiFi, so that was an immense help for my kids who needed to be on zoom meetings all day long. We asked for a late checkout, and were given an extra hour. Wanted more, but they said Friday things really start to get busy. I understood, so I took what I could get. The tow yard was literally right across the street. (Not sure if that’s a plus for anyone else, but for us, it definitely was.) We quickly realized we were going to need another night’s stay because of all the work we had to do. The desk clerk, Ethan, was super nice and pleasant, but he said they could only give us one of the rooms because most of the others will already booked for the weekend. So we were going to have to all cram into one room. With a roll-away bed, this was doable, but not preferred. I did ask if they had any cancellations to let me know as I’d take the second room. What I didn’t know what that the owner, Kartik Patel, was sitting in the lobby and overheard me. I came back a few minutes later to ask for some more towels, and Mr. Patel was at the computer. He ended up working whatever logistical magic he needed to do, moving other reservations around, I think, to not only get me a second room, but get it right next door. All of this on the fly, and we were able to have the space to spread out; our two teenaged boys in one room, my daughter, wife and dogs in another. The bottom line is this: we were dealing with some of the worst circumstances we’ve ever faced, and our stay and experience at the Relax Inn was a pleasant reprieve from all the other chaos. More
